Learn to run nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on state-of-the-art instrumentation in the Minnesota NMR Center, gaining hands on experience with high field spectrometers. Whether you are considering NMR as a research tool in your lab, or would like to learn more about the technique in general, these workshops and courses address practical aspects of experimental NMR and provide valuable experience.

The MNMR Center offers two laboratory courses for both undergraduate and graduate credit, covering many of the same topics as our Practical Workshop. Learn more.

Specialized training

If you would like specialized training on a specific spectrometer or in a specific area of NMR, the Center offers one-on-one training with NMR staff! Please contact NMR staff.

 

Practical Workshops

During the Practical NMR Workshop, you will learn useful techniques and experiments on Varian Inova 600 MHz and Bruker Avance 700 MHz spectrometers. Offered over three days, you’ll gain valuable information and experience on the following topics:

 • Introduction to NMR Hardware and Laboratory Techniques
 • Introduction to TopSpin and VnmrJ Software
 • Basic 1D Acquisition Optimization, and Processing.
 • 2D NMR Acquisition and Processing.
 • As well as other special topics including Biomolecules, Solid-state NMR, and Metabolomics

Dates are flexible, and workshops are offered when a minimum enrollment of 4 students is reached.

 

Costs for Practical Workshop
Academic fee: $300 = $100/day (Payable by EFS #)
Industry fee: $450 = $150/day

The 2017 Annual Advanced Protein Workshop will be held May 15-19,  2017!

Advanced NMR Workshops offer advanced instruction in specific NMR applications. This workshop covers protein NMR from data acquisition to structure determination. Offered over five days, students gain valuable information and experience on the following topics:

 • Multi-dimensional experiment set-up
 • Interpretation of protein NMR spectra
 • Computational methods to calculate protein 3D structures
 • Measuring protein dynamics and interactions


Registration Details

Cost: $650 per person for the 5-day workshop, plus a $100 discount for early registrants (prior to April 1, 2017)

Student-style accommodations are also available.

NMR Laboratory Courses

The MNMR Center offers two courses for undergraduate and graduate credit that cover the basic hands-on aspects of NMR techniques.

 

BioC 4225 - Laboratory in NMR Techniques

Practical aspects of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Hands-on experience with a 500/600 MHz instrument. Sample preparation/handling, contamination sources, tube/probe options, experiment selection, experimental procedures, software, and data processing. This course is similar in content to the NMR workshop but is offered as a undergraduate lab course for one credit. The class is typically 4-5 days from 9am to 5pm sometime in May.
